Swiftwater Rescue - Technical Level 1

Technical Level 1 provides skills practice for technician level rescuers, focusing on muscle memory. Technician level rescuers don't have time to always think in an incident, so relying on those instincts will be critical.

So that there is more time to hone muscle memory and practice life-saving skills, online pre-work is important.

Technician Level for Flood & Swiftwater Rescue Training with Fathom Academy includes:

  • Introduction to NFPA 1006, 1670, and 1983
  • Incident Command Basics
  • Pre-planning and Site Survey for a flood incident
  • Conducting a Scene Size-up
  • Understanding of basic hydrology
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Search and Rescue
  • Shore-based Rescue (onsite)
  • Ropes & Lines (onsite)
  • Aircraft and Watercraft support (onsite)
  • Urban SAR (onsite)
  • Incident Termination (onsite)
  • Defensive and aggressive swimming techniques (onsite)
  • Low water crossing (onsite)
  • Live Bait
  • Swimming rescues
  • Tension diagonal
  • Tethered swimmer
  • Working in all team roles (lead, safety, spotter, etc) (onsite)
Technical Level 1

Prerequisites: 

  • Successful completion of SWT - Operations
  • Active member of a SAR team
  • Certified first responder
